Summer is beautiful. But for older adults, the heat can be more than just uncomfortable. It can be dangerous.
At JS Angel Care Home Health LLC, we care deeply about the seniors we serve in Sarasota and Bradenton. And every summer, we want to make sure families and caregivers have the information they need to keep their loved ones safe. ❤️
So let us talk about heat exhaustion, what it looks like, what to do, and when to call for help.

Why Older Adults Are More at Risk
As we age, our bodies do not regulate temperature the same way they used to. Older adults are less likely to feel thirsty even when they are dehydrated. Certain medications can also affect how the body responds to heat.
That combination makes seniors especially vulnerable during the summer months. And heat exhaustion can come on faster than most people expect.
Signs of Heat Exhaustion to Watch For 🌡️
If you are caring for an older loved one this summer, here are the signs to keep an eye on:
- Heavy sweating
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Weakness or feeling tired
- Cool, pale, or clammy skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Muscle cramps
- Headache Rapid heartbeat
These symptoms are your body’s way of saying it is struggling to cool down. Do not ignore them.
What To Do Right Away
If you notice any of these signs in someone you are caring for, here is what to do:
- Move them to a cooler place immediately
- Have them sip cool water or an electrolyte drink
- Remove extra clothing and loosen anything tight-fitting
- Use a fan or cool cloths to help lower body temperature
- Rest and monitor symptoms closely
Acting quickly can make a big difference. Most cases of heat exhaustion improve with these steps within 30 minutes.
When To Call 911 🚨
Some situations go beyond heat exhaustion and become a medical emergency. Call 911 right away if the person:
- Is confused or not acting normally
- Has a high body temperature
- Has a rapid pulse that does not improve
- Cannot stop vomiting or keep fluids down
- Faints or loses consciousness
These are signs of heat stroke, which is life-threatening. Please do not wait to see if it gets better on its own.
Prevention Is the Best Protection ☀️
The good news is that heat-related illness is largely preventable. Here are a few simple habits that go a long way:
- Stay hydrated throughout the day, not just when thirsty
- Avoid being outdoors during peak heat hours, usually 10am to 4pm
- Wear light, breathable clothing
Check on older loved ones often, especially those who live alone
A quick phone call or visit can truly save a life. 💛
